Eyvend
An Elk tribe watchman, around forty. He lost his wife and daughter in one of the earlier elemental attacks on the ravine, and after that he was one of the quiet ones: he ate when told to and spoke when spoken to. When the Coldpeak column arrived in Session 18, the camp feasted and cheered them in, and he sat apart. Several of the Elk were like that, so nobody noticed him in particular, the party included.
In Session 19, Arveth asked for him by description, not by name: the one sitting apart, the one who was supposed to keep watch. Father Joseph went back to the feast and sat down with him. “You die here, everything that was known about your family is gone. But if you survive this, you can keep their memory.” He asked for Joseph’s story in return. Then the rest of the camp began to speak. The Elk had always told the story of the journey after a meal, and that night each of them told what they lived for.
He took the watch on the ridge the next morning and kept it. He saw the elementals coming down the rim and shouted, “There are incoming from above!” The camp came up armed and went to the positions Berg and River had laid out the week before. Nobody was under the boulders when they came down. He was thrown from the ridge and landed at Joseph’s feet.
The Telling
The morning after the siege, the Elk came to hear his story from Joseph, the one man who had sat with him. That night the tribe held its first telling under the new custom, and he was the first one told. The camp gave Joseph a name for it: Thread Giver. (Session 20)
Before the Rethreading: In the unwoven, nobody sat with him at the feast, and he never went to his post. No one was watching the ridge, so the elementals came down through the rim unseen and the camp took it for a rockslide. Elk died under the stone. Eyvend lived. Only Father Joseph remembers it that way. The Rethreading rewrote it in Session 19; memories surface as half-rumor, not error.
